The
Big Spirit
Steve Spirkoff, the
driving force behind Spirit, has been a pioneer of off-road vehicle
design and fabrication since the 1960s. Called the "unofficial
spokesman for corporate America's interest in the ... highly innovative
world of professional off-road racing" by SCORE Monthly, Spirkoff
has earned top corporate sponsorships. An accomplished driver,
as well as a much sought-after vehicle builder, Steve Spirkoff
works with some of the most successful racing teams in motorsports.
Steve Spirkoff began
his career at the age of 16 as a member of an off-road race team
entered in the second Baja 1000, in 1968. He has been involved
in the automotive industry ever since. His career has taken him
from Baja, Mexico, to London, England, to the United Arab Emirates.
After working for several
fabrication firms, he decided to start Spirit in 1982. "I had
worked for a lot of different people and wanted to have a shop
where things were done right. I wanted to pursue my own direction
and ideas." Steve's reputation certainly supports these goals.
"We chose the name
Spirit because that's what sums up the kind of people we are involved
with. They have an inner drive that sets them apart from the rest.
I want my clients to know that, if they are racing or sponsoring
one of our vehicles, they are getting the most for their money.
Every time that vehicle shows up for an event, it is the very
best it can be."
A seasoned Baja veteran
and successful driver in his own right, Steve has also helped
several young drivers win Rookie of the Year awards through his
logistical abilities. "Almost anyone can get in a car and go fast.
It's knowing where to go fast, where to save the car, and where
to put your people and spares around the race course that make
you a winner."
From building his first
Jeep for the 1968 Baja 1000 to numerous prototype and image vehicles
for major automotive manufacturers, Steve has truly done it all.
Over the years, Steve Spirkoff has won the respect of both major
corporations and the racing community. But Steve's expertise doesn't
end there.
Hot rods and street
vehicles are also a part of Steve's history. "I've built dozens
of street vehicles--everything from rear-end swaps to complete
vehicles. Recently, I had the thrill of getting to buy back my
'55 Chevy, which I had owned in high school. It had been one of
my first projects. It's great to drive it to street rod shows
and cruises and hear the praise it receives."
